This Christmas, Iain invited me and four others to make our own albums of the "best" Christmas music we could think of. The rules specified that the music didn't necessarily have to be Christmas music, but it had to somehow be connected to the holiday season.
Points to Iain for including the Lucy Liu's speech from Kill Bill (the "Queen's speech": a standard for any English Christmas) and to Jon for his inclusion of Low's "Last Snowstorm of the Year".
Here's mine:
1. Sigur Ros - "Hoppipolla"
2. Sixpence None the Richer - "You're a Mean One, Mr. Grinch"
3. Chuck Berry - "Run Rudolph, Run"
4. Charlie Brown - "Merry Christmas Baby"
5. Weezer - "The Christmas Song"
6. The Pogues - "Fairytale of New York"
7. Thrice - "Carol of the Bells"
8. The Dandy Warhols - "Every Day Should Be a Holiday"
9. U2 - "I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For" (the shopping anthem)
10. Weezer - "Holiday"
11. Joe Christmas - "Coupleskate"
12. Pedro the Lion - "Letter From a Concerned Follower"
13. The Weakerthans - "Bigfoot!"
14. Havalina Rail Co. - "Winter"
15. 3nd - "Season"
16. The Weakerthans - "Psalm For the Elks Lodge Last Call"
17. Israel Kamakawiwo'ole - "Somewhere Over The Rainbow/What a Wonderful World"
I decided to keep the theme going (procrastination, that is) and made up a New Year's album as well:
A New Year's Album
1. The Weakerthans - "(Manifest)"
2. U2 - "New Year's Day"
3. Motion City Soundtrack - "The Future Freaks Me Out"
4. Brighteyes - "The New Year"
5. Further Seems Forever - "New Year's Project"
6. Smashing Pumpkins - "1979"
7. Green Day - "Good Riddence (Time Of Your Life)"
8. Low - "Last Snowstorm of the Year" (sorry Jon)
9. Hum - "Songs of Farewell and Departure"
10. Jimmy Eat World - "My Sundown"
11. Badly Drawn Boy - "Year of the Rat"
12. Eels - "Fresh Feeling"
13. Keane - "Everybody's Changing"
14. The Beatles - "Hello Goodbye"
15. Abba - "Happy New Year"
(Hidden Track) Cake - "End of the Movie"
So whaddya think? Any glaring omissions, or songs that just really don't fit? What would you include on an album for the New Year? Any soundtracks for 2007? 2008?
