To-Read List

Having finished the massive load of reading required for my dissertation, I am now looking forward to reading for fun again. Not that reading every available scrap of writing written by Greene isn't fun; but there are a few things I've been meaning to read over the past six months that I just haven't had the chance to.

So, as I don't really have the energy to think of anything better to write, here's a list of the books that I'm planning on reading/have bought already, in no particular order (kind of):

01. "And the Ass saw the Angel" by Nick Cave (currently reading) - a strange, dark, "Southern Gothic tragedy" by the Australian rock star. Who is not looking that great these days.

02. "The Ministry of Fear" by Graham Greene - I started it, and then realised that it really didn't apply to my dissertation. But it's really good. Really really.

03. "Twenty Letters to a Friend" by Svetlana Alliluyeva - Iain left me this before he went to Japan, and I now have time to read it.

04. "Grace (Eventually): Thoughts on Faith" by Anne Lamott - my mum got me this one for my birthday.

05. "The Once and Future King" by T.H. White - I haven't read this one since just after I finished my undergrad, and it was good then.

06. "Galileo's Daughter" by Dava Sobel - recommended by Jo's dad, who generally had good taste in books.

07. "Dance Dance Dance" by Haruki Murakami - one of the (few) Murakami Harukis I haven't read yet. Haven't even started the Murakami Ryus...

08. "Thud!" by Terry Pratchett - a little light reading, to help my brain heal a bit

09. "Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee" by Dee Brown - I've wanted to read this one since about 1995, and I finally found it in a used bookshop in Headingley.

10. "The Name of the Rose" by Umberto Eco - Oh Eco; brilliant, funny, and well-written. And so bloody long.

11. "Nip the Buds, Shoot the Kids" by Kenzaburo Ōë - Found this one for 50p. in a charity-shop-closing sale. And bought it, obviously. I have no idea what to expect of it.

12. "The Men Who Stare at Goats" by Jon Ronson - What? The US government spent billions of dollars on research into parapsychology and psychic warfare? Well, hopefully it all turned out better than that whole LSD thing.

13. "The Sense of Movement" (poetry) by Thom Gunn - Got this when I was reading Ted Hughes, and haven't had a chance to look at it yet. Hopefully it'll help get me back into poetry writing.

And loads more, I'm sure. Any recommendations? Comments? Gossip?

The God Delusion. But then, you knew I'd say that.

You have to tell me if you like Thud. I am a huge huge fan of Pratchett. I just gobbled up Making Money in two days (which I believe is his latest). It was not one of my favorites, but it was ok. (To be honest, I was a little disappointed because I loved Going Postal, which is the previous book in that thread.) I love the City Watch thread, which is what Thud is a part of. It's the latest, though, so you'll miss some of the inside jokes.

How's life treating you these days?
