Extremely Loud and Incredibly Unnecessary (but fun)

What’s this? April Fools’ Day? But of course.

And, seeing as it is the first of April, it’s that magical day when the Google powers-that-be (the human ones, not the sentient robotic ones) play little jokes on the web-browsing masses, like magical little garden gnomes spreading cheer. This year is no exception, with subtle jokes cropping up on various Google apps.

Firstly, from the Official Google Blog, is the announcement that as of 1am PST, Google has changed it’s name to Topeka. This is apparently to honour Topeka, Kansas, which has recently changed it’s name to Google. Don’t believe me? Go Topeka Google yourself.

While you’re Topeka-ing Google, KS, take a look in the upper right-hand corner at the time it took to perform that search. Did it take 2.00 shakes of a lamb’s tail? 85.85 jiffies? 0.39 times the velocity of an unladen swallow? 1.21 gigawatts? Great Scott! That’s heavy, Doc.

Google Mail has apparently lost all vowels, which is just careless of it, really. I’d suggest questioning Vanna White (0.63 microweeks).

One interesting new feature, which may or may not be Fools’-related (I’ve only discovered it today, so I can’t say) is the 3-D mode on Google Maps (beta, 0.71e-15 epochs*). For fun, try finding your house, go into Street View, and click on the little Lego-looking man wearing 3-D glasses. Instantly, the internet-based view of your house is transformed into a 3-D internet-based view of your house! Wow!

Now if we could only harness this power and use it for good

* 0.71e-15 is approximate slowdown of Pulsar B2111+46, and also a Googlewhack.
